Progress on the Broadway site
Work on creating an urban garden on the Broadway shopping development site in Bradford city centre is taking shape.
Contractors from developer Westfield began work five weeks ago levelling part of the site to create a temporary green space while the development itself is on hold.
Paths are being built, green spaces will be created and lighting will be installed.
Hoardings will be moved back to make the garden accessible from several points around the site.
The £300,000 scheme follows an agreement between Westfield, Bradford Council and regional development agency Yorkshire Forward, who are expected to contribute a third each to the cost of the project.
A Council spokesman said:
“At the moment the site is still in the possession of Westfield and the landscaping work is ongoing.”
Planning permission has been sought from Bradford Council to allow the area to be used temporarily as an urban garden and a decision is expected shortly. The Bradford Urban Garden site will be controlled by the Council, while the rest of the site will remain under Westfield’s control.
Contractors will protect manhole covers and steelworks, install ducting for street lighting and CCTV and put down hard areas for pedestrian routes and soil for wildflower and grassed areas.
On handover to the Council, the authority will install lighting columns, CCTV and a pedestrian crossing outside the Midland Hotel. It will also add seats, litter bins and lights.
